This year’s Eagle & Badge Foundation Gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hit very close to home for many of our honored guests. The evening opened with the impactful unveiling of the End of Watch Memorial Wall which brought a somber silence to the packed ballroom. Our guests bowed their heads in thanks and remembrance for those brave officers who have perished while protecting our community. It is one thing to hear the statistics, it is quite another to stand in front of the towering memorial, 58 feet long and weighing in at over 15,000 pounds, and see the names of the 207 LAPD officers who died in the line of duty. Foundation President Peter Repovich dedicated the wall to the families of those officers and to the dedicated Medal of Valor and Purple Heart recipients who joined us this year.
While the wall served to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our safety, the In the Line of Duty Awards also celebrated five dedicated individuals who strive to make our community better each and every day and support the LAPD in all that they do. Our 2014 honorees, newly elected Sheriff Jim McDonnell, Austin Beutner, Alan Skobin, and Robert & Linell Shapiro are selfless individuals who are making a difference. Their dedication to law enforcement and the community they serve is unwavering, and the multitude of programs and non-profit organizations among them have made a huge impact in our City.
Our special guests helped make for a memorable evening. Our charismatic host Mario Lopez, and our co-host Frank Mottek, kept the evening moving. Special Guests Larry King, L.A. Police Commission President Steve Soboroff, and former District Attorney Steve Cooley were on hand for the presentations, along with remarks from Repovich, Gala Event Chair Arthur M. Kassel, and our energetic live auctioneer Amy Ashton. Our event wrapped with a powerhouse performance by multi-platinum recording artists Wilson Phillips.
While it’s only one night a year, the spotlight shines bright on the Eagle & Badge Foundation. The organization supports the officers of the LAPD and their families year-round so your continued support is crucial. Please consider becoming a sponsor of the End of Watch Memorial Wall or a lifetime member of the Eagle & Badge Foundation by calling our office at (818) 994-4661 for more information or to schedule a meeting with Peter Repovich or one of our E&B board members.
